EDP brings energy transition to more families with new solar energy solution for apartments
EDP Comercial has entered the solar energy segment for apartments to address an important part of the country's energy transition process, family energy consumption. Apartment owners with balconies with railings and good sun exposure can now produce and consume their own energy, reducing network energy consumption by up to 25%.
According to official Eurostat data, about half of Portuguese families live in apartments, with no roof space to install panels and benefit from solar energy in their homes. Now, it is possible to opt for a solution with lighter panels than traditional ones and that are installed on apartment balcony railings and then connected to a simple electrical outlet.
With only three and a half kilograms per panel (and not the 20kg of a traditional panel), the EDP Solar Apartments offer is capable of producing enough energy to allow a saving on network energy consumption of up to 25%. The system can be monitored in real-time by families through the EDP Solar App, giving them greater control and knowledge of the energy they consume in their homes.
Apart from being less dependent on the electricity grid and fluctuations in electricity prices, these families can thus contribute to the country's energy transition, avoiding more than 100kg of CO2 emissions per year.
Solar energy solutions for apartments are a new market in Portugal and have significant potential for the country's transition. The solution now offered by EDP can capture a substantial portion of this market, as it is estimated that more than half of the balconies in Portugal are made of railings.
Households have a fundamental role in the country's decarbonization, and as more sustainable solutions exist, it will be possible for more families to be part of the energy transition and benefit from it, producing and consuming renewable energy, replacing the use of gas in their homes with clean electricity, opting for efficient equipment or embracing electric mobility.
Decentralized energy production is one of the main growth paths for EDP in the coming years, whether through installations in homes, businesses, or the creation of energy communities. EDP today has customers and projects both in families and companies in 15 markets, totaling 2.9 GWp contracted. In Portugal, there are already more than 140,000 families who have chosen to save on their energy bill with EDP solar panels.
